Hereford’s IQ or The Independant Quarter

The Heart of Hereford

The Independent Quarter or IQ as it is also known, is a group of streets in the oldest part of the City. Parts of the area date back to Saxon time. The area is still enclosed by walled defences (some original and some repaired) and ditches. The streets still retain many of the old buildings which are used by modern retailers and businesses.

If you’re looking for something not on the high street, then you’ll find it here. Food and drink specialists who source locally as well as further afield for quality produce with fewer food miles. Cafes, restaurants and bars aplenty. If you need something new for a night out from a hair cut to a beauty treatment, or a new outfit to impress at the office or something for those special occasions there are ladies fashion and accessory shops.  For the chaps there are places to get suited and booted as well as a selection of more casual on trend fashions.

Church Street, will draw you in from the market square of High Town, give you a hug as you explore the old buildings and the exciting goodies the independents have to offer in this pedestrian street, before releasing you into the greenery of the Cathedral precinct. Admire the lofty heights and architecture of the Cathedral before you continue on to the Castle Green and the River Wye.

More will be written about the history of Church Street and the Independent Quarter in our blog as time goes by.
